Fridge At The Study Gallery
The Study Gallery is a multi-faceted organisation with as much, if not more, happening behind the exhibition programme that forms its public face.
The gallery works with people of all ages, but prioritises opportunities for young people.
Fridge was conceived to fit a particular niche in that overall scheme. We believe that young artists are the catalyst to much of the natural and essential need for continuous change in the practice, presentation and dissemination of art.
As both an implicit and practical dimension, Fridge embodies opportunities for members’ voluntary training in aspects of arts administration, exhibition design and realisation, and workshop and studio support activities. These occasionally lead to opportunities for paid work. It is also another way of getting creative practice into the community.
The majority of Fridge members are recent graduates whose work is mostly underpinned by a good understanding of contemporary, and often historical practice.
By affording Fridge the opportunity to present independent voices, it has already feels like there is a new and potentially powerful visual arts movement emerging in Poole. This should encourage new creative pressures and challenges within The Study Gallery - internal invigoration.
What that movement offers and does for the cultural life of the town also has big potential. Will it be nurtured and encouraged by others outside The Study Gallery?
